Preteens try out the meatless lifestyle for lots of different reasons: the influence of vegetarian celebrities; the desire to fit in with friends who don't eat meat; or, because of a developing sense of compassion for animals.

The town of Churchill in Canada's far north will expand its unique "polar bear jail" to house more wayward carnivores and reduce the threat of bear attacks, an official told AFP.

The facility, built in 1980 in the world's polar bear capital, will also be cooled now over the summer to make the furry inmates' incarceration "a bit more bearable," said Shaun Bobier of the Manitoba Conservation Department.

For bird lovers across northern India, the terra-cotta colored Charity Bird Hospital in the yard of the 16th century Digamber Jain temple has become a sanctuary for ailing birds and small animals.

Anyone finding an injured bird can bring it to the hospital and it will be nursed back to health. All treatment provided by the team of veterinarians and volunteers -including surgery- is free.

A court in India has called an unusual witness to the stand - a donkey!

The animal was taken in by the police after it got caught up in a protest against officials and was 'arrested' along with the demonstrators.

Just days before the first bull run in Pamplona, hundreds of activists, most wearing little more than a red scarf and horns, will take to the streets for the annual “Running of the Nudes”. Compassionate and fun-loving people from around the world meet in Spain every year to show the city that it doesn’t need to torture animals for tourism. The “Running of the Nudes” is not a race – it’s a rally, a reunion and, most of all, a rocking party! It will take place at the 5th of July.

In the heart of the rainforest of Borneo biologists found a snake that has the ability to change colour. This was discovered when the researchers put the snake in a bucket. It turned form red-brown to white just like chameleons do.

The poisonous snake is named Kapuas Mud Snake, after the river that flows in the region where the serpent was found.

Alongside the submarines, ships and airplanes participating in large-scale military exercises in the Pacific this month, a team of sea lions and dolphins are expected to patrol the sea.

These marine animals will be flown in from San Diego for simulated mine recovery and mine detection during the biennial RIMPAC war games.

Friday, in South San Francisco, a man with a soft spot for bunnies was reported to the local humane society. When animal welfare workers arrived at his home, they discovered 80 rabbits chewing on day-old bagels and cauliflower. He bought two rabbits for his son. But before he knew there was a whole lot of them. The man did not know that rabbits can also be helped so they won't make more babies.
